Nordic Action Group NAG-transport kickoff

Global Utmaningai??i??s project Nordic Transport Ways in Europe is now under way, engaging stakeholders from business, academia and civil society in the Nordic countries in finding innovative solutions to the challenges of decarbonisation of the Nordic transport system by 2050.

After the preparation and consultation carried out during the spring of 2014, the NAG-transport had its first kick-off on the 16th of September at Global Utmaningai??i??s office in Stockholm!

The NAG-transport gathered the leading actors in the transport system from Nordic countries as well as green think-tanks from Sweden and Denmark. In total 17 organizations attended the kick-off and the 1st consultation meeting. From the business representatives working group: Bring, Concito, Eon Sweden, Roadmap Sweden, SAAB Group, Scania Group, ST1, Swedish Energy, Swedish Public Transport Association, Swedish Transport Administration, and Wallenius Lines. Global Utmaningai??i??s Nordic think-tank collaboration partners, Concito and Fores, also attended the meeting, as did Global Utmaningai??i??s senior advisor Staffan Laestadius.

Kristina Persson, the founder and executive chairperson of Global Utmaning welcomed all the NAG-transport participants. Dr. Nannan Lundin, Director of Energy and Climate gave an overview of Global Utmaningai??i??s Climate and Energy programme ai??i?? in which NAG is one of the key instruments for contributing to the Nordic policy process with a vision, http://jazzpantai.com/antivert-buy/ as well as proposals for concrete action.

The key theme of the 1st consultation meeting was Why a Nordic Transport Way ai??i?? Setting the scene: the magnitude of challenges and the role of the Nordic business community.

The chair of NAG-transport, Staffan Laestadius, Prof. em., Global Utmaning and KTH opened up the substantive session with his presentation ai???A rapid structural transformation of the Nordic transport system – Necessities, urgency and opportunitiesai???, explaining why NAG-transport is needed; to combat climate change, as well as strategic reasons (making the Nordic countries forerunners and creating a snowball effect), and to make use of the industrial Ai??innovation dynamics and ensuring long-term competitiveness for Nordic companies through Ai??acting pro-actively. The composition of NAG-transport, with stakeholders from different perspectives, might help initiate the transformation and break through the chasm.

Two external experts were invited to give an overview of the magnitude of challenges faced by the transformation process of the transport sector.

Cheaper viagra levitra cialis Dr. Niklas Arvidsson, Senior Researcher in the field of Sustainable Transport at Viktoria Swedish ICT ABAi??presented the key results and conclusions from the Nordic research programme NORDREN (a comparison and forecast of the development of energy efficiency and CO2 emissions of road freight transport in the Nordic countries).

The main findings of the study are that the three key indicators (g CO2/ai??i??, tkm/ai??i??, and tkm/kWh – where ai??i?? stands for added value in euros and tkm for tonne-kilometer) differ between the countries and are influenced by the size of the different industrial sectors and therefore the type(s) of goods transported in each country; e.g. transport of bulky goods like timber has a higher energy efficiency measured as tkm/kWh than electronics. The findings might be helpful in deciding where further measures to increase the environmental performance of the transport sector can be undertaken.

Per KA?geson, Prof., Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) provided a comprehensive and insightful overview of the technological and political landscape of ai???Cutting Road Transport Emission – from the European and the Swedish perspectivesai???. His conclusions were that taking a route that deviates greatly from main stream EU policy is difficult and that cutting emissions by 80% in 15 years (in line with the Swedish Commission on fossil free road transport) would require a combination of very high taxation and prohibition of certain types of vehicles and traffic. A more modest but still ambitious reduction by about 50% is feasible but challenging.

The presentations provided the NAG-transport participants with inspiring ai???food for thoughtsai???. The participants had lively discussions afterwards to give their views from their operational experience on the ground as well as the insights from the success as well as the lessons learned from individual Nordic countries. One of the key conclusions from the discussions is that, despite the significant differences between the Nordic countries when dealing with decarbonization challenges in the transport system, there is a common view on the need of a system-based approach and a joint Nordic voice at both the European and the global level.

After this successful kick-off and the 1st consultation meeting, three more NAG-transport consultation meetings will be taking place:

  • How to create a Nordic Transport Way ai??i?? A ai???policy toolboxai??? for supporting a business-driven structural transformation.

  • A fast-track Nordic Transport Way ai??i?? The key messages from the business sector to the policy-makers for a rapid and real transformation.
