2nd stakeholder consultation of NAG Transport
Staffan Laestadius, professor at KTH, senior advisor to Global Utmaning and Chair of NAG transport held a presentation showing that the decarbonisation of the Nordic transport system faces major challenges, but also great economic opportunities for the Nordic countries. By taking advantage of the unique conditions, including the availability of sustainable and advanced biofuels, the Nordic countries can be forerunners in the green transition.
Dr. Niklas Arvidsson, Senior Researcher at Sustainable Transport Viktoria Swedish ICT AB and senior lecturer at University of Gothenburg, argued that itai??i??s important to focus on urban freight because the sector represents a large part of the emissions in cities. He also presented a new model for urban distribution, where a mobile depot in the form of a bus circulates around town and smaller vehicles are used to distribute the last hundred meters.
Anja Silvennoinen, Vice President PAi??yry Management Consulting Oy, held a presentation of different scenarios for Nordic transport based onAi?? figures from the Nordic Energy Technology Perspective, which was put forward by the Nordic Energy Research and IEA. This presentation also highlighted the challenges of decarbonising of the heavily fossil fuel dependent transport sector. In a short-term perspective, there are energy efficiency measures that are economically profitable but locked-in for because of both regulatory and market-related barriers. In the longer term a combination of actions, including using more biofuels, electrification of transport, reducing the growth of transport demand, focused research and deployment will be useful for achieving the decarbonisation goal.

Utmaning, opened the floor for discussions. The first topic to be discussed was public transport. It was agreed among the participants, that in order to double the public transport, national goals are required. The issue of bringing the public transport sector closer to research was also discussed, concluding that there is a need for a more knowledge-based implementation.
The various challenges facing logistic-companies were also discussed, for example the load paradox for biofuel-trucks. The heavier the vehicle is, the heavier the tank is needed and the less cargo the truck can take. This is a very important limiting factor for logistic-companies that want to adapt to biofuels. Another key issue is achieving a better trading value on the second hand market for biogas cars.
Lastly the best practices when it comes to biofuels in different countries were discussed. In Finland there are good examples of how to incentivise the production of biofuels, whereas in Sweden there are good examples of how to incentivise the usage of biofuels.
Nannan and Staffan wrapped up the discussions by concluding that there are very good examples in all the Nordic countries and that we need to learn from each other. They also addressed that in order to have a real impact one has to influence decisions taken at the EU-level.
